What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Understanding the science behind modern cosmetic injectables and how we customize them for you.

The Science of Volume Restoration

Dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables that add volume beneath the skin to smooth lines and enhance facial contours. They typically consist of biocompatible, FDA-approved substances, most commonly hyaluronic acid (HA), that physically lift and support the skin’s structure.

Unlike neurotoxins (Botox), which relax muscles to reduce expression lines, fillers restore volume that has been lost with age. This is why they’re often called a “liquid facelift”, restoring youthful fullness without a single incision.

At New Horizons Wellness Center, we offer a carefully curated range of premier filler products matched to each patient’s specific anatomy and goals.

Filler Options

Choosing the Right Filler for You

We work with the full range of Juvederm, Restylane, and Sculptra, Emile selects the right product based on your anatomy and goals.

Our Primary

Juvéderm®

Hyaluronic Acid Filler, Allergan

Our primary filler line. A family of soft HA gels with Vycross technology for smooth, long-lasting results. We carry Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella for different areas and goals.

  • Voluma, deep cheek and midface lift
  • Vollure, nasolabial folds and smile lines
  • Volbella, lips and fine perioral lines
  • Dissolvable with hyaluronidase

Duration: 12 to 24 months

Restylane®

Hyaluronic Acid Filler, Galderma

A versatile HA filler family preferred when a different gel consistency is needed. Refyne and Defyne maintain natural expression while softening folds; Kysse is a lip-specific filler with natural feel.

  • Refyne & Defyne, laugh lines with natural movement
  • Kysse, soft, natural lip volume and color enhancement
  • Ideal for sensitive or high-movement areas
  • Dissolvable with hyaluronidase

Duration: 12 to 18 months

Sculptra®

Poly-L-Lactic Acid, Galderma

A biostimulator rather than a traditional filler. Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your body’s own collagen production, delivering natural volumizing that develops over weeks and lasts longer.

  • Best for overall facial volume loss
  • Results develop over 2 to 3 months
  • Series of 2 to 3 sessions typically needed
  • Not dissolvable, collagen-based mechanism

Duration: 2+ years

The Process

What to Expect During Your Filler Appointment

01

Consultation

Emile evaluates your facial structure and discusses which filler type and volume will best meet your goals. A personalized plan is created based on the depth of your wrinkles, skin thickness, and the look you want to achieve.

02

Injection

The treatment typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the areas treated. Fine needles or cannulas are used for precise placement. Most fillers contain lidocaine within the product itself, reducing discomfort as they are placed.

03

Comfort

“At NHMW, to improve comfort, some patients will request lidocaine cream before the treatment session. Most patients find the procedure tolerable and do not require anything.” Results are visible immediately after treatment.

04

Recovery

Mild swelling subsides within 2 to 3 days, followed by a natural look. Minor bruising is possible. We recommend avoiding intense exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat for 24 to 48 hours. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.

Candidacy

Which Filler Treatment
Is Right For Me?

With so many filler options, the best choice depends on your specific anatomy, the areas you want to address, and your aesthetic goals. During your consultation, we examine the areas of concern and create a personalized plan, recommending the ideal fillers based on your skin depth, wrinkle severity, and desired outcome.

In some cases, we may suggest combining fillers or pairing filler treatments with Botox for a comprehensive “liquid facelift” result. Our injector has an artistic eye and over 18 years of experience, so you can trust the recommendation. If you have HA fillers and want them reversed, hyaluronidase can dissolve them safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas can dermal fillers treat?

Fillers can treat cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, temples, jawline, chin, and under-eye hollows. During your consultation, we will assess your facial structure and recommend the areas that will give you the most balanced, natural improvement.

What types of fillers do you offer?

We offer Juvederm (Voluma, Vollure, Volbella), Restylane (Refyne, Defyne, Kysse), and Sculptra. Each product has a different consistency and is designed for specific areas and depths of injection. Emile Kettle, PA selects the right product based on your anatomy and goals during your consultation.

How long do dermal filler results last?

“At NHMW, we use Juvederm fillers that will last at least 12 months, 18 months to 24 months.” Sculptra results can last up to two years. Lip fillers tend to metabolize faster and may need a touch-up at 6 to 12 months. Duration also varies by treatment area and individual metabolism.

Will my face look natural after fillers?

Natural results are our standard. We take a conservative approach, adding volume gradually and assessing balance throughout the treatment. Overfilling is a concern we actively avoid. You will look like a refreshed, more youthful version of yourself.

Can fillers be dissolved if I’m not happy?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm and Restylane) can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This provides a safety net that many patients appreciate. Sculptra, because it stimulates collagen differently, cannot be dissolved in the same way.

Do filler injections hurt?

“At NHMW, to improve comfort, some patients will request lidocaine cream before the treatment session. Most patients find the procedure tolerable and do not require anything.” Many of our fillers also contain lidocaine within the product itself, which numbs the area as the filler is placed.

How much do dermal fillers cost?
