What Are Dermal Fillers, and How Do They Work?
Dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables that add volume beneath the skin to smooth lines and enhance facial contours. They typically consist of substances like hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite that are biocompatible and FDA-approved for facial injection. By plumping targeted areas, fillers can fill in wrinkles and hollow spots, restoring a youthful fullness to the face. Unlike neurotoxins (Botox), which relax muscles, fillers physically lift and support the skin’s structure, hence they are often called “liquid facelifts.”
At New Horizons Wellness Center & MediSpa, we offer a range of premier dermal filler products to match your needs, including:
- JUVÉDERM® (Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Vollure®, Volbella®): A family of soft hyaluronic acid fillers used to plump lips, smooth “parentheses” lines (nasolabial folds), and add mid-face volume. Results Last 12 to 24 months, depending on the filler and treatment area.
- Restylane® (Refyne®, Defyne®, Kysse®): A versatile hyaluronic filler line. Refyne and Defyne are great for laugh lines and deeper folds, maintaining natural expression, while Restylane Kysse is a lip filler designed specifically to provide soft, natural lip volume and color enhancement
- Sculptra®: A poly-L-lactic acid injectable that stimulates your collagen production for gradual volumizing. Often used for overall facial rejuvenation; results develop over a few months and can last 2+ years.
New Horizons Wellness Center & MediSpa also provides regenerative injectables like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which uses elements of your blood to rejuvenate tissue. While not fillers, these additional services complement our filler treatments to address other aspects of aging. Fillers are most commonly injected into the face and lips, but we can also enhance other areas of your body that lack volume (for example, some fillers can rejuvenate aging hands by plumping the skin on the back of the hands).
What Benefits Do Dermal Fillers Offer?
Dermal fillers offer a host of aesthetic benefits by reversing volume loss. The advantages of choosing fillers at NHWC include: Restored volume and youthful contours: Fillers can lift sagging or hollow areas (like sunken cheeks or under-eye troughs) by restoring lost volume, making your face look fuller and more youthful.
- Smoother, fewer wrinkles: By filling in creases (such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines), fillers soften wrinkles and fine lines, often erasing years from your appearance.
- Plumper lips: Lip fillers can augment thin lips for a natural, soft pout. We specialize in subtle lip enhancements that look balanced and attractive, not overdone.
- Improved facial symmetry: Fillers allow us to gently tweak contours, for instance, correcting a volume asymmetry in the cheeks or lips, resulting in a more harmonious facial appearance.
- Immediate results with no surgery: You’ll see improvements immediately after your filler treatment (unlike some procedures that require waiting), and there’s minimal downtime. It’s a quick in-office procedure with a long-lasting effect.
- Long-lasting, but not permanent: Depending on the type, fillers can last from about 6 months up to 2 years. You can maintain results with periodic touch-ups, but if you ever choose not to continue, the filler will metabolize safely over time.
- Boosted collagen (with certain fillers): Some fillers (like Sculptra or Radiesse) stimulate your body’s own collagen production for natural skin strengthening over time.
- Confidence boost: Perhaps most importantly, by achieving a more youthful, refreshed look, whether it’s smoothing your smile lines or plumping your lips, dermal fillers can enhance your self-confidence and satisfaction with your appearance.
Overall, fillers provide the rejuvenation you desire without surgery or significant downtime. You get subtle, natural-looking results that keep others guessing your age.
Which Dermal Filler Treatment is Best For Me?
With so many filler options available, you might wonder what’s right for you, lip fillers, under-eye fillers, cheek fillers? During your consultation, the New Horizons Wellness team will examine the areas that concern you, discuss your beauty goals, and create a personalized plan. We’ll recommend the ideal fillers based on the specific needs of each area. Factors like the depth of your wrinkles, the thickness of your skin, and whether you want a very soft or a more robust fill all help determine the choice. For example, if you want to soften fine lines around the mouth, a lighter hyaluronic acid filler might be used, whereas deeper nasolabial folds might need a thicker filler. If your goal is to address hollow under-eyes (tear troughs), we have specific techniques and specialized fillers for under-eye rejuvenation.
In some cases, we might suggest combining fillers or even pairing filler treatments with Botox for a comprehensive result, this is often called a “liquid facelift.” By using multiple injectable treatments, we can both relax wrinkles and replace volume, providing a balanced, youthful outcome. Rest assured, our injector has an artistic eye and over 18 years of experience with cosmetic injections, so they will help you choose the right approach. Our aim is that you leave with natural-looking improvements that still look like you, just refreshed and confident.
How Long Do Fillers Last?
Dermal filler longevity depends on the type of filler and the area treated:
- Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (e.g., Juvéderm): Generally last around 12 to 24 months. For example, lip fillers may last 6 to 12 months due to the high movement in that area, while cheek fillers can last closer to 12 to 18 months (and some newer HA fillers can even last up to 2 years).
- Radiesse®: Usually lasts around 12 to 15 months for many patients.
- Sculptra®: Stimulates collagen production; a series of treatments can yield results that last 2+ years since your tissue is improved.

Treatment Areas for Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers can address volume loss and contour concerns throughout the face. Common treatment areas at our Shenandoah location include:
- Cheeks, Restoring midface volume and lifting sagging skin
- Nasolabial folds, Softening the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth
- Lips, Adding volume, improving symmetry, or defining the lip border
- Marionette lines, Reducing the lines that extend downward from the corners of the mouth
- Temples, Filling hollowing in the temple area that creates a sunken appearance
- Jawline, Defining and contouring the lower face for a more sculpted profile
- Under-eyes (tear troughs), Reducing dark hollows beneath the eyes when appropriate
Many patients benefit from treating multiple areas in a single session for a balanced, natural result.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
Your dermal filler appointment begins with a consultation where Emile evaluates your facial structure and discusses which filler type and volume will best meet your goals. The injection process typically takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the number of areas treated.
Regarding comfort, “At NHMW, to improve comfort, some patients will request lidocaine cream before the treatment session. Most patients find the procedure tolerable and do not require anything.” Many of the fillers we use also contain lidocaine within the product itself, which numbs the area as the filler is placed.
After treatment, “Initially, there is some swelling that will go down within a two to three day, followed by a more natural look.” Minor bruising is also possible. We recommend avoiding intense exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day.
Results are visible immediately and continue to improve as swelling subsides. “At NHMW, we use Juvederm fillers that will last at least 12 months, 18 months to 24 months.” For ongoing maintenance, “Generally most patients will come in for a touch up once every 12 months.”
Frequently Asked Questions About Dermal Fillers
Q: What areas can dermal fillers treat?
A: Fillers can treat cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, temples, jawline, chin, and under-eye hollows. During your consultation, we will assess your facial structure and recommend the areas that will give you the most balanced, natural improvement. Contact us to schedule.
Q: What types of fillers do you offer?
A: We offer Juvederm (Voluma, Vollure, Volbella), Restylane, and Sculptra. Each product has a different consistency and is designed for specific areas and depths of injection. Emile Kettle, PA selects the right product based on your anatomy and goals.
Q: How long do dermal filler results last?
A: Duration varies by product and treatment area. “At NHMW, we use Juvederm fillers that will last at least 12 months, 18 months to 24 months.” Sculptra results can last up to two years. Lip fillers tend to metabolize faster and may need a touch-up at 6 to 12 months.
Q: Will my face look natural after fillers?
A: Natural results are our standard. We take a conservative approach, adding volume gradually and assessing balance throughout the treatment. Overfilling is a common concern patients bring up, and it is one we actively avoid. You will look like a refreshed version of yourself.
Q: Can fillers be dissolved if I’m not happy?
A: Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm and Restylane) can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This provides a safety net that many patients appreciate. Sculptra, because it works differently by stimulating collagen, cannot be dissolved in the same way.
Q: Do filler injections hurt?
A: Most patients tolerate filler injections well. “At NHMW, to improve comfort, some patients will request lidocaine cream before the treatment session. Most patients find the procedure tolerable and do not require anything.” The fillers themselves also contain lidocaine to reduce discomfort during injection.
