Not necessarily, and not without an in-person assessment first. Migration is more concerning when fullness or a ridge persists beyond the area that was injected, but overfilling, poor technique, or using the wrong filler can look similar. A qualified injector should assess what is actually happening before recommending dissolving.
How Do You Know If It Is Actually Migration?
Swelling and bruising are normal after lip filler and can take days, sometimes two weeks, to settle. What you see in the first week may not be migration at all.
Emile Kettle explains: "Migration is more concerning when fullness or a ridge persists beyond the area of injected site." But overfilling, using the wrong fillers, inexperienced technique, or filler placed too superficially can look similar. He assesses the area in person, using ultrasound when the cause is unclear, before calling it migration.
If you notice a shelf above your lip border that was not there before, or unevenness that has not resolved after two weeks, those are signs worth assessing. But the cause matters. True migration, overfilling, and superficial placement each require different responses.
What Happens If Dissolving Is the Right Option?
If the filler is hyaluronic acid, dissolving is straightforward.
"If it's hyaluronic-acid filler, dissolving usually involves injecting hyaluronidase into the affected area. The appointment is brief, and the enzyme starts working within seconds, but swelling can follow and some cases need multiple treatments after reassessment."
Emile Kettle, PA
Hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid. It works quickly, but it is not perfectly targeted. Some of the surrounding filler, and a small amount of your natural hyaluronic acid, may also be affected. That is why you may look flatter for a short time while the tissue settles.
Not every filler is hyaluronic acid. Some fillers are not reversible with hyaluronidase. If you do not know what product was used, bringing your treatment records to the assessment is important.
Does Dissolving Ruin the Lips?
No. The concern is understandable, but dissolving does not damage the lips.
Emile Kettle is direct: "It doesn't usually 'ruin' the injected site. It can temporarily reduce some of the natural hyaluronic acid, so they may look flatter while the tissue settles." The flatness is temporary. Once the area heals and inflammation resolves, the lips return to their natural baseline, and new filler can be placed if you choose.
When Can You Get Filler Again After Dissolving?
Not immediately.
"I generally wait at least two weeks after dissolving, and longer if there's still swelling or inflammation, before retreating with fillers again."
Emile Kettle, PA
Rushing to refill before the tissue has settled can lead to uneven results or a new round of overcorrection. The wait is part of getting a better outcome the second time.
How Does a Conservative Approach Prevent Migration?
Emile Kettle describes a staged method that lowers the chance of migration in the first place:
"To lower the chance of migration, I take a conservative, staged approach: assess the person's anatomy and existing filler, choose an appropriate product and placement, use measured amounts, and avoid repeatedly adding filler before the previous result has settled."
Emile Kettle, PA
Stacking filler on top of filler before each session has settled is a common cause of overfilled results. The staged approach means waiting, reassessing, and adding only what is needed.
What Should You Bring to a Filler Assessment?
If you are seeing a new provider or returning to your original injector for a correction:
- The name of the product that was used, if you know it
- When the injections were done
- How much was injected, if you have that information
- Photos of your lips before and after the original treatment
- Any notes about previous corrections or dissolving treatments
This information helps the injector understand what is already in your lips and plan accordingly.
When Should You Seek Urgent Care Instead?
Migration is a cosmetic concern. Certain symptoms are medical emergencies.
Severe pain, blanching or dusky skin color, vision changes, weakness, fever, spreading redness, drainage, or rapidly worsening swelling require immediate medical attention. These can indicate vascular occlusion or infection, both of which need urgent treatment. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment if you experience any of these.

Questions About Lip Filler Migration
Can all fillers be dissolved?
No. Hyaluronidase works on hyaluronic acid fillers. Other filler types are not reversible with this enzyme.
Will dissolving hurt?
There is some discomfort, similar to the original injection. Numbing can be used.
How many dissolving sessions are needed?
Often one, but stubborn or large amounts of filler may require a second session after the tissue has settled.
